How Private Barrel Picks Work — Inside Harry's Barrels

What makes a private barrel pick special?

A private barrel pick is a single barrel of whiskey—usually bourbon—that a retailer or group selects directly from a distillery. Unlike bottles you find on standard shelves, these are hand-chosen by someone who knows the spirit inside and out. The distillery bottles it exclusively for that buyer, making it a one-of-a-kind release that you won't find anywhere else.

At Campbell Wines, we've built relationships with distilleries across Kentucky and beyond. When a barrel is ready, we taste it. We evaluate the proof, the age, the flavor profile. If it meets our standard—rich, balanced, and worth your money—we claim it. If it doesn't, we pass and wait for the next one.

Why the selection process matters

Distilleries produce thousands of barrels every year. Not all of them are equal. Some are too hot. Some lack depth. A private barrel pick cuts through that noise. It's a curator's stamp of approval on a specific barrel that stood out in a blind tasting.

This is where experience counts. After more than a decade sourcing allocated bourbon for the Bay Area, I've learned what separates a good barrel from a great one. I've tasted enough bourbon to know when a barrel has the complexity and character worth talking about—and worth your shelf space.

How we source them

The process starts with relationships. We work directly with distillery partners who trust our palate and our customers. When new barrels are ready for selection, we get the call. We visit, we taste, we decide. Sometimes we pick multiple barrels from the same distillery in a single year. Sometimes we go months without finding one that's right.

Once we select a barrel, the distillery bottles it with our label. It arrives at Campbell Wines with a story—the barrel number, the proof, the age, sometimes notes on the mash bill or finishing process. That transparency matters. You're not just buying bourbon; you're buying the decision behind it.

What you get

A private barrel pick is typically limited. We might receive 100 to 300 bottles from a single barrel, depending on the size and proof. Once it's gone, it's gone. There's no reorder, no second run. That scarcity is real, and it's part of what makes these allocations valuable to collectors and enthusiasts.

You also get context. Every bottle comes with the knowledge of why it was chosen, how it tastes, and how it compares to the standard release from that distillery. That's the value of curation.
